Join Charles Peer in creating a Soft Pastel Masterpiece at Splatter Art + Studio!
A word from the Instructor, Charles Peer:
“My goal is not to instruct you to paint like me. Rather, it is to add to your knowledge for making strong paintings and pastel techniques so you can go back home with this experience as reference information you might find helpful while developing your personal style.
My workshops are set up with a cycle of demos showing a stage of a painting’s development, followed by painting exercises and time to develop your own piece to the same level of the completion with some one-on-one instructor guidance. Interspersed are conversations of many related topic and ideas. The day usually concludes with a short review of the day and viewing our progress.”
Topics of discussion and discovery:
The stages of building a strong painting.
Developing an interesting idea for a painting.
How to use photographs effectively as our reference material.
Developing a strong composition (design) and focal area of interest.
Developing an exciting color scheme.
Various techniques to use as a painting develops.
More in depth discussion on color and how technology can help broaden your ideas of what is possible.
Selecting work to submit to competitions. What are those jurors and judges looking for?
Preparing your images for competition submissions.
Review of what we have learned and accomplished.
Required Workshop Materials:
We will only be working with soft pastels (no oil pastels). Although I primarily use Unison and Terry Ludwig pastels feel free to bring whatever brands you have and are comfortable with. In my box I also have some Great American, Girault, Richeson, Blue Earth and Nupastel. Make sure you have a full range of values, including some nice darks.
Painting surfaces
Currently my favorite painting surface is LuxArchival. I sometimes use UART papers (usually 400 or 320 grit are my personal preference and I do like their beige color). There are other sanded papers that work well, but I just do not have as much experience with them i.e. Richeson, Pastel Mat etc. If you are used to
some of the other sanded papers feel free to bring whatever surface you prefer, just make sure it will hold up to getting wet with the rubbing alcohol (you cannot get La Carte wet!). I would expect to need about four to five 11” x 14” pieces. If you prefer a different size, bring that. I find 11” x 14” or 12” x 16” works pretty well for the time constraints of a workshop. I also like to have a few sheets extra sheets and/or a few sheets of a less expensive sanded pastel paper for short exercises, i.e. Canson Mi-tientes. I will be give each participant one 11” x 14” sheet of LuxArchival sanded paper.
Other supplies
Drawing/mounting board
Drafting tape (Blue painter’s tape also work but I don’t care for the color next to my work.)
Spray fixative (optional)
Baby wipes (for cleaning hands)
Paper towels
Small amount of rubbing alcohol for underpainting. The higher the alcohol content the quicker it dries.
Small container for mineral spirits or denatured alcohol
Brush(s) for underpainting – I usually have a couple of sizes of old bristle brushes, at least ¼” wide and larger.
Sketchbook (any size) and pencil
Latex gloves or other hand protection if desired
Glassine paper to cover and transport finished pieces (wax paper will work for temporary use)
Easel (you can use table easels on the provided tables or bring a standing easel)
Protective covers for the floor and table if the host request them
Four-eight (4-8) photo references. I will be working on landscapes (I like to have
them printed full sheet if possible, or from a tablet. You may need to bring a charger. Please do not try to work from a phone.)
& Any other supplies or materials you enjoy working with.
It would be wonderful if several participants brought a hair dryer and extension cord with multiple outlets. Having several on hand would be very helpful.
